Calgary,
Alberta – September 2, 2003: The Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Foundation today announced both the recipients and finalists of 14 separate award and prize categories which recognize notable Albertans for their outstanding achievements in science, technology and research.
The award theme, “Innovations for Living Well”, has attracted a broad range of nominations from organizations and individuals alike who have made not only a significant, positive impact on the quality of life in
Alberta, but the world.
One submission in particular which underscores the ASTech theme (Innovations for Living Well) is this year’s winner of the Excellence in Science and Technology Public Awareness Prize: The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) Outreach Program. The FGSR recruits grad students focused on the sciences to judge science fairs, educate and mentor budding young
Alberta scientists with the goal of teaching them how research in science and technology can improve their lives.
Another notable mention making their first appearance at the 2003 ASTech Awards is The Mariah Energy Team. This group, which is a finalist in the “Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology Award,” has developed a combined heat and power system that produces clean heat and power at twice the energy efficiency and half the greenhouse gas emissions of conventional coal-fired systems.
“Alberta’s science and technology community is having a substantial impact on our quality of life, and this gala celebrates their spirit and dedication.”
We want Albertans and Canadians to understand and be aware of what’s happening in our province, and how important that work is to the world,”
said Fred Stewart, ASTech’s newly appointed Executive Director.
The 2003 Awards Gala will be held
November 7, 2003, at the TELUS Convention Centre in Calgary, Alberta. This prestigious event includes a reception, four-course gourmet dinner and keynote address from former Alberta Premier, Peter Lougheed. Attendance at this year’s gala,
“ASTech Awards: Innovations for Living Well” is expected to surpass over a 1,000 leaders and influencers from across
Alberta and Canada.
